Church of England head criticises Bush

The leader of the world's Anglican congregation, England’s Archbishop of Canterbury, has blasted U.S foreign policy on Iraq as being completely at odds with Britain’s benevolent imperial past.

Archbishop Rowan Williams, has been quoted in a British Muslim magazine as saying interference in Iraq by the U.S had led to the worst of all worlds.

Dr Williams heaped scorn on the “chosen nation myth of America” and urged the administration to launch a 'generous and intelligent program of aid directed to the societies that have been ravaged; a check on the economic exploitation of defeated territories and a demilitarisation of their presence'.

He said it was one thing to take over a territory and then pour energy and resources into administration, as Britain had done in India, but another thing to go in on the assumption that a quick burst of violent action would somehow allow you to move on and leave other people will put it back together.

He also said the Muslim world needed to acknowledge that its political solutions were not the most impressive.

Dr Williams has been a persistent critic of the war in Iraq.

Last month he said the conflict had wreaked terrible damage on the Middle East region and urgent action was needed to stabilise Iraq.
