JERUSALEM, Jan. 13 (Xinhua) -- Two Israeli officers were mistakenly shot dead on Wednesday night by Israeli fire, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) said on Thursday.
The officers, Major Ofek Aharon, 28, and Itamar Elharar, 26, were misidentified and killed during a security patrol adjacent to an IDF military base in the Jordan Valley in the West Bank, according to the Israeli army.
The circumstances of the event are under review, it added.
Israel's state-owned Kan TV news reported that the two officers went on foot patrol around the Nabi Musa base, after a night vision device was stolen from their military company the previous night.
During the patrol, the two officers identified a suspicious figure and fired into the air. One of the fighters in the unit thought that terrorists were firing in his direction, and fired at the two officers, the report added.
