Jordan, Syria thwart 7 drug-smuggling attempts, seize nearly 1 mln pills

AMMAN, Oct. 5 (Xinhua) -- Jordan and Syria have thwarted seven cross-border drug smuggling attempts and seized nearly 1 million pills intended for illegal distribution in the region, the Anti-Narcotics Department of Jordan and its Syrian counterpart announced in a joint statement on Sunday.

The statement added that they also dismantled organized crime networks involved in regional drug trafficking and arrested several suspects in both countries.

The two departments reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining cooperation to protect both nations from the threat of narcotics and related security challenges, emphasizing that combating drug smuggling requires strengthened regional and international cooperation.

Jordan and Syria agreed to form a joint security committee to secure their borders and combat arms and drug smuggling in January.
